  1. Watch kids when they are around water! If there are a group of adults, then a water watcher should be responsible for watching the water for a certain amount of time.
  2. Teach your child to ask for permission to go near water.
  3. Teach children to swim as soon as they are ready. Places like YMCA offer classes. www.ymcasuncoast.org or www.coresrq.org
  4. Stay in arm’s length of weak swimmers.
  5. Don’t rely on water wings, swimming rings, or inflatable toys to keep your child safe.
  6. Best always to swim with a buddy, but don’t trust a child’s life to another child.
  7. Keep a cell phone, first aid kit, and throwing equipment near water.
  8. Take pool safety, water safety, first aid and CPR/AED courses through your local Red Cross.
  9. Install 4 feet fences around the entire pool with self-closing and self-latching gate.
  10. Install pool alarms. There are several kinds including floating pool alarms,                        side anchor pool alarms, or alarms on doors and windows that lead to pool areas.
